"Ma vie en rose" is an unusual French film about 7 y/o Ludovic (kind of ridiculous - the actor is already 11 y/o) who believes he was meant to be a girl. Being anxious to change this "awful" state of being a boy, he dresses up in girl's clothes, plays with dolls, refuses to get his hair cut (looks awful!) and wants to marry his best friend Jérôme.
It's not astonishing that this behavior discomfits his environment: he is being rejected by neighbors and classmates. Imagine for instance that your best friend asks you to marry him later in life - not as a joke! Ludovic's parents first don't take their son's idiosyncrasy serious and are overstrained when they find out that this is not a temporary thing. They try to fix this problem by taking him to the psychiatrist, but it won't help. Ludovic simply cannot understand what this is all about, because he truly believes that mother nature wanted him to be a girl.
After an uproar at a barbecue at the neighbors, the situation escalates. Finally the family moves to another town.
I have conflicting feelings about this film:
On one hand, this is a very touching story about what it is like to be different from the rest of society and thus being rejected. His parents finally accept their son the way he is: they let him decide which clothes are most comfortable for him to wear etc. The ending is open - we don't know whether Ludovic turned back to normalcy or not.
On the other hand, I'm uncertain how realistic the scenario is: I've never heard of a 7 y/o who wants to become a girl so badly. Also the film misses telling what the brutal consequence would be for Ludovic if he really would keep on going for his goal: as a transsexual he will have to go through surgery to change his sex... what a horrible imagination! Don't forget what mental and physical stress such a person goes through!
This movie is a very good example of how a boy's hairstyle governs his looks! Until the last 15 minutes of the film we are unable to see how beautiful that lad really is, since he looks more like a girl than a boy with that awful hairstyle. It's always a shame if a boy hides his beautiful face behind hair!
But see for yourself in the gallery:
"Want to marry me?"...
...."No, he doesn't!"
One of the visits at the shrink - always without success!
A serious word with sister Zoe
"Ludovic? Yes, that's me!"
YES!!! After 1h 9min this boy finally reveals his entire beauty, after his hair has been cut!
Bad Dreams
A grandmother who we all envy
"What's over there?"
"Hi, I'm Ludovic, and who are you?"
Boy, are you beautiful...
...and even more when you're crying
